Acai berry is a species of palm that grows in swamps and floodplains of rain forest regions in South America. It produces a small purple-black fruit that has been used by the Caboclo peoples of the Brazilian Amazon for centuries.
The berry is about the size of a blueberry and has become a traditional food in these regions, often served in a gourd as a cold "soup", juice or ice cream flavor.
It is a low-sugar fruit and tastes like a combination of red wine and chocolate.
The fleshy pulp of this incredible fruit, pronounced "ah-sigh-EE", sits around the large seed of the berry that has very unique health components like no other fruit in the world.
Acai berries contain unprecedented amounts of
antioxidants
with high amounts of anthocyanins producing 10-30 times more than those found in red wine.
In research conducted on the berry, it was found to have a high antioxidant absorption rate on the people tested, increasing levels of anthocyanins and antioxidant effects.
In a study done at the University of Florida, it was proven that the antioxidants from Acai actually destroyed cancer cells on a tested human culture and appears to have a destructive effect on leukemia cells tested. Wow!
Other Health Benefits include:
fatty acids- 12% linoleic acid, decreases HL and LDL levels
There is nothing like fresh Acai berry blended into a juice or
smoothie.
There are, however, other alternatives to fresh Acai, so you can to take in the amazing health benefits of this super fruit.
The pulp can be bought frozen and also freeze dried into a powder. We have used both, but find the powder more convenient.
It is a deep purple color and gives a nice energy boost to start off your day right.
