Nascent Iodine Benefits for Thyroid Gland Function

iodine-supp

Iodine is an essential nutrient needed for optimal thyroid superhealth. Our body does not store iodine, so we need to consume it on a regular basis.

Seafoods, greens, raw sunflower seeds and seaweeds, like kelp and bladderwrack, have sufficient amounts of iodine to maintain an already healthy thyroid gland.

However, those with major thyroid health issues are usually deficient in this much needed nutrient and should supplement with a potent iodine solution, rather than getting it solely through diet.

Iodine consumption is especially important during nuclear power plant meltdowns, like the Fukushima disaster in 2011 or anytime large amounts of radiation are present in the atmosphere around you.

Sufficient iodine nutrients provide protection against the uptake of radioactive iodine-131. (Also see Superfoods for Radiation Exposure - Superfood Evolution Ezine #15)

However, taking the right kind of iodine is important. Our super supplement choice is Nascent Iodine.

This is a consumable iodine in its atomic form rather than its molecular form, which is of a higher quality than many others available and often prescribed.

Why is Nascent Iodine Better?

Nascent Iodine is the most perfect form of iodine because it is immediately usable to the body. It is a paramagnetic iodine that has a free electron which gives it a negative charge.

Nascent Iodine, unlike any other forms of iodine sold, has a huge energy release when taken internally.  It is able to maintain a “charged” state and can be diluted in water and consumed.  It gradually loses energy over the next 2-3 hours and should be used immediately for the highest Nascent Iodine benefits for thyroid health.

"Nascent Iodine is recognized by the body as the same iodine that is produced by the thyroid and is absorbed effortlessly."

In addition, the company also states that:

Nascent Iodine is also totally different from the typical iodine in its denser state sold as an antiseptic, or as iodine tri-chloride (claiming to be atomized), or as added to potassium iodide to make it soluble in liquid.

It is also unlike glandular or prescriptions containing hormones that take over the thyroid's job, instead of nutritionally building the thyroid to do its own job. Some foods are good sources of iodine, but may not have the levels necessary to support the thyroid fully for good homeostasis in the body.

Nascent Iodine Benefits for Thyroid Health

For Optimal Thyroid Gland Function

The thyroid gland attracts the highest amounts of iodine compared to other organs of the endocrine system.

Most of the iodine consumed in the form of nascent iodine will go right to the thyroid, especially if it is compromised by either hypothyroidism (under active hormone production) or hyperthyroidism (over active hormone production).

A hypothyroid condition is far more common than a "hyper" over active one.

What Can Cause a Hypothyroid:

  • nutritional deficiencies
  • overuse of antibiotics
  • uptake of radiation and depleted uranium into the gland
  • consumption of fluoride (found in tap water)
  • use of birth control pills

Nascent Iodine will begin by flushing out the gland daily and overtime, after the initial detox phase, will begin to substantially nourish the gland back to a healthy state.

This is of course assuming you adhere to a strict diet plan and lifestyle program, eliminating all refined, processed, preserved, trans-fatty foods from your diet. In addition to alcohol and caffeine.

It is imperative that you consume mostly whole foods or commit to a high raw diet (free of large amounts of goitrogen-rich foods and cruciferous vegetables).

(See Superfood Evolution #31, Superfoods for the Thyroid Gland for more on general foods to eat as well as our top superfoods for an underactive thyroid.)

Like we mentioned, Nascent iodine benefits for thyroid function help to both detoxify and replenish the gland over a period of time.

Because it has the free electron, it chelates heavy metals, like mercury, out of the body as well as any uptake of depleted uranium and radiation stored in the gland. This is very helpful for most people and especially those with candida, which feeds off of mercury deposits.

Iodine also fights yeast and fungal infections through its powerful antiseptic properties.

What are Iodine Deficiency Symptoms?

"Iodine deficiency is one of the four major deficiency diseases in the world." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

It is important that you get your thyroid tested by a qualified physician so you know exactly what is going on with your health.

There are many different types of scenerios and it is helpful to know where you stand by getting a complete thyroid hormone test.

Some Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency Include:

  • high or low blood sugar
  • hormonal imbalance
  • chronic inflammations
  • liver toxicity
  • auto-immune diseases
  • chronic nervous disorders
  • fatigue
  • inability to express oneself creatively

Common Diagnosed Thyroid Disorders

1) Goiter - enlarged thyroid
2) Grave's Disease - hyperthyroid
3) Hashimoto's Disease - hypothyroid

NOTE: Those who are iodine deficient will most likely feel the effects of taking nascent iodine immediately, with a noticeable effect on energy levels. For those with a "hyper" thyroid condition, whereby too much thyroid hormone is being produced, it is important that you don't take too much because it can cause a stimulating effect much like that of caffeine.

Recommendations for Nascent Iodine Therapy

It is recommended for those with hypothyroid to start with 1 dropper full and build up to between 3-5 droppers daily (with water) on an empty stomach.

For those with a hyperthyroid, the dosage is much less beginning at 1 drop and building up to between 3-5 DROPS. The evaporation rate of iodine is quite fast so make sure to drink the solution immediately.

Some advise taking Nascent Iodine throughout the day, but from our experience, iodine is most effective when consumed on a completely empty stomach, which would be as soon as you wake up in the morning.

Experiment for yourself and take your dose at least 1 hour before you eat.

Try to avoid taking it before dinner as you might feel a boost of energy when it is time to sleep. It is also important to build up your dose gradually so you experience the least amount of detox symptoms.

The ingredients in Nascent iodine are in a base of organic grain alcohol. (2% Iodine by weight / 400mcg of nascent iodine per drop).

Iodine Dosage Exercise:

When taking your nascent iodine supplement put energy and attention on your thyroid, massage it and feel it cleanse and nourish you.

Visualize it pulling out unwanted dark energy and replace it with a vibrant glow. This is something that I practice daily when adhering to an iodine treatment protocol, it really works and I believe helps the process.

Side Effects

A temporary system flare up can result from periods of detoxification.  This is actually a natural response and part of the cleansing process.  Many people stop taking it when this happens, which is unfortunate.

I always recommend doing what feels right to you and your own particular situation, but if you can't move through the detox reactions, which often come and go quickly, you can not heal.

To help speed the detoxification process it is helpful to also take zeolite and fulvic acid at this time, especially if you are experiencing a serious heavy metal detox.

What is the Herxheimer Reaction?

The Herxheimer Reaction, or "healing crisis", means that when you try to take something that kills, say, an infection; the infection fights back causing a flare up and exaggeration of symptoms.

You may feel worse temporarily as toxins are released from the fat cells into the blood and removed from the body. It is helpful to promote cleansing process by drinking lots of water if you experience such response.

But it is always your choice, of course, to stop or at least cut back on your dose if it is too uncomfortable.

Precautions:

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional, before consuming nascent, if you are pregnant, nursing, have a thyroid-related issue, a serious health condition or are taking prescribed medications.
