Hi superfood friends! I am the superhealth enthusiast behind the scenes of this site. My name is Shira Locarni.
In essence, this website is the "diet" piece of my life, uploaded onto these pages with the intention that I might offer some superfood options for improving your health via the foods you eat.
Sure, I know that diet is not everything, but it certainly is a place to start if immediate health and recovery from sickness or disease is your goal. This was the first step to rebuilding my own health after a Grand-mal seizure at the age of 21! But, you can see more on that at the bottom of this page.
My online superfood story began over 3 years ago in 2008, when I decided to make this website. Its transformation from an idea to a "superfood lifestyle and motivational health guide" was a bit of a journey as I had no prior experience with intricacies of building a site, let alone figuring out how people were going to find it!
I simply had a deep passion and desire to share and pass on helpful tips, recipes and info about the wonderful, exciting world of superfoods I have come to know and love.
Now, thanks to SBI (Site Build It), my traffic more than doubles every month and I am able to post about my weekly superfood adventures and updates... free of technical difficulties.
About Us:
My husband and I are huge supporters of exercise in the great outdoors! We love to travel and full-time RVing is our passion, in addition to exploring diverse nature terrains, hot springs, rivers, deserts and high mountain peaks.
For us, superfoods naturally integrate into our nomadic lifestyle and active life. I can't say no to a raw gourmet picnic by an ocean view ...there is nothing quite like the combination! Or coming back from a morning hike to the smell of tonic herbs brewing ready to be blended into a super duper drink to fuel another amazing day! Another great part about traveling is discovering new wild foods that populate wild areas we visit. This year was our biggest harvest of miners lettuce ever, bags and bags of free wild food for a over a month.
In addition to sharing a great LOVE for the wilderness at its finest, we each have our own unique talents and interests that have merged together to create a whole lot of superfood fun in our "kitchen on wheels."
My husband is the sprout master extraordinaire, previously owning his own sprout business (Urban Organix) in Davis, Ca. In addition, he also takes great pride in his raw culinary skills, as well as his knack for making the most delicious homemade tempeh in the world.
I am also a bit of a whiz in the kitchen and love to create raw vegan recipes and healthier cooked food options. I am in charge of fermenting our weekly half gallon jar of sauerkraut and yearly batch of fermented miso paste. I am currently working on a sauerkraut recipe book, which will include all my favorite raw cultured veggie combinations I have created over the years. So, stay tuned for that!
My BIO:
On the more official level, I am a Certified Herbalist and Wholistic Lifestyle Counselor with certifications from the Evergreen School of Integrative Herbology, Dry Creek Herb Farm and Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Studies Homestudy Certification Program. My apprenticeships involved a 2 year intensive program integrating Chinese, Ayurvedic and Western herbs and dietary approaches. My continued study and emphasis on Chinese tonic herbs sparked an interest in Asian culture and their traditional use and preparation of fermented foods, which I began to make at home and incorporate into my own diet.
I am a Lifestyle Consultant, Superfoods Coach, independent researcher and previously maintained my own Massage Therapy practice for 14 years specializing in Advanced Shiatsu and Acupressure. My special interests include raw superfood nutrition, wild edible plant identification and wildcrafting, as well as a great love for fresh seaweed harvesting on the Northern California coast.
My Story
Like most, my beginnings were motivated from my own sickness and disease that began as a child. Constant sickness, chronic allergies and depression in my childhood lead me to receive my first gray hair at age 16 and more throughout adolescence. Over time, as a young adult, my nervous system became over-stimulated by caffeinated substances, coffee and denatured, lifeless food choices.
At the age of 21 I had a Grand-mal seizure!!!!!!
There was no found "cause" of this seizure by the medical profession. It went undiagnosed as "something that just happens sometimes."(??)
I knew inside that it was my lifestyle habits and deep state of malnutrition that helped to create a complete nervous system breakdown. It was a blessing in disguise and totally turned my life around!
My body was giving me the signs and this wake up call lead me to re-educate myself about health and how to find the highest nutrient dense foods possible to rebuild my nerve and life-force. That was over 23 years ago and I am proud to say that today I feel healthier, happier and more energetic than I did when I was 16 or 20!
Through my years of research, study, experimentation and life experience, I have concluded that "what we eat" (and "don't eat") does matter. The idea for this site started out of a desire to contribute my discoveries to what I feel are necessary dietary ingredients to higher states of health... what I call "superhealth."
