The Benefits of Kelp As A Superfood!

Kelp, out of all the seaweeds, has extraordinary proportions of super nutrition that really make it top among the sea plants, enriching cellular health and balance.

The other seaweeds we mention (nori, dulse, and irish moss) all have there unique health enhancing properties, but if you were to choose only one, this would be the one!

It IS one of the most iodine rich seaweeds and foods known!

The uptake of minerals from this super seaweed into the body and blood stream deeply nourishes all the glands and organs, increasing their efficiency.

This brown sea vegetable (in the order Laminariales) has been used extensively in Asian culture and other coastal cultures of the world where seaweeds proliferate.

Benefits of Kelp

Balances Thyroid

Kelp is one of the most bio-available sources of iodine among all the seaweeds. It is essential for thyroid balance and important to have in the body, so you don't take on radioactive iodine that may be present in the environment.

It adds the perfect balance to the endocrine system, re-establishing proper glandular and hormonal harmony for greater emotional stability and increased sense of well being. Its high iodine content is part of the reason for this effect because it regulates the thyroid. The thyroid gland maintains proper metabolic processes and is a necessary part of a clear mind, calm nervous system and active body.

This important gland is responsible for brain, nerve, reproductive, and skeletal functions of the body, and it is very important that we keep it healthy... superhealthy! Seaweeds high in iodine are a great way to do that, but you must take eat them on a regular basis and make them part of your life in a big way, not just here and there!

Hypothyroid VS Hyperthyroid

We need to actually consume iodine from our food because our body or thyroid does not store or make it. In a condition called hypothyroidism, kelp can come in handy for helping produce more thyroid hormone.

When a person has a tendency to be "hyper" thyroid, whereby the thyroid is producing too many hormones, iodine should be avoided. A large percentage of the average population, however, are more prone to being hypo-thyroid, rather than hyper, so kelp and other seaweeds can be a great addition to the diet.


How To Use:

We put kelp powder in our miso soup with green leafy vegetables or in raw soup recipes. It adds a particularly nice thickness to soups because of its algin and carrageenan content.

I personally don't like the taste of it so much, but don't mind it camouflaged into other flavors. It is a stronger, "fishy-er" taste than the other seaweeds. Luckily, it is easy to hide in many recipes. It works well in seed cheese recipes and in sauces and dips.

When I am really trying to up my dose, I often mix kelp powder into a small glass of water and drink it down many times throughout the day, in addition to adding it to my meals whenever I can.

An average dose would be between 2t- 2T daily.


Other Kelp Benefits - Algin

Kelp, containing algin, is a rich source of polysaccharides like xylose, fucose and galactose. These long chain essential sugars are beneficial as antibacterial, anti-viral and antifungal agents.

They are known to help prevent types of cancers associated with the digestive tract and also provide a wide array of health qualities, from enhanced brain function to increased lung health. Algin is the mucilage gel that comes from kelp and helps to remove heavy metals from the body, including lead, cadmium, barium and zinc.

Cadmium being a toxin produced from auto exhaust, which is prevalent in the air around us.

Harvesting Kelp:

I love harvesting seaweed and fresh kelp every year. I always make sure to get a little extra for my garden. I love the way it looks hanging to dry.
