What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a mineral substance that is the carbon footprint of an ancient ecosystem, trapped and preserved within the Himalayan mountain regions near Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan.

High in these mountains, this thick, rich paste can be seen oozing out from the rocks and towering cliffs.

It contains within it the nutrients from a pristine ecosystem that existed 50 million years ago and is rich in ancient minerals and many elements that are depleted in our soils today.

The great thing about Shilajit is that you can eat it in powdered form. I know this sounds crazy, like eating dirt, but it actually tastes amazing with a rich, smoky flavor.

I first started using it these past couple of years in my shakes and recipes. It is nice to use with other top superfoods, like maca root and hemp seed. Everytime I use it I feel like its feeding me something important that I must not be getting nutrition wise. I thought I'd share with you what I know about this amazing superfood and the "special ingredient" it provides to help you remineralize hard core!

"Shilajeet" is a popular rasayana, Ayurvedic herb and adaptogen that has been used for centuries in Vedic culture. Traditionally it is known to boost the effects of other herbs and is often mixed in with other herbal preparations.

In Sanskrit the literal meaning of Shilajit is "rock like", meaning the power to make our body like a rock, enabling it to withstand the ravages of time with unmatched powers that reverse the aging process and promote longevity. Now that sounds good to me!

High in Fulvic Acid!

What is particularly fascinating about this incredible mineral is it's high concentration of fulvic acid. Naturally occurring in healthy soils, fulvic acid is a key element that makes nutrients absorbable by plants and other organisms. Interestingly, as we mentioned above, it has this same effect in our bodies when we use it with other herbs and superfoods. It also promotes the movement of other minerals, especially calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium into muscle, tissue, and bone.

In addition it:

  • increases metabolism of proteins
  • assists in removal of toxins heavy metals and “bad” calcium
  • restores electrical balance to cells, neutralizing toxins
  • naturally boosts immune system
  • is excellent for bone-healing

Other Shilajit Benefits

Shilajit contains at least 85 minerals in Ionic form as well as humic acid and fulvic acid. It helps accelerate the process of protein and nuclei acid metabolism and stimulates energy providing reactions. It counteracts diabetes and regulates the blood sugar levels. It stimulates the immune system and improves recovery after exercise, in addition to counteracting debility, weakness and general fatigue. It purifies blood, improves functioning of pancreas and strengthens digestion. WOW!

How to Use:

I have been experimenting with using this superfood in many dessert recipes and pie crusts with other superfoods. It has a great flavor that has a kind of bitter chocolatey taste to it. I use it in my caramel recipe, see Superfood Evolution Ezine #13.

Most drinks also lend themselves well to shila-jit. I don't particularly care for it in fruit smoothies, but it does blend very well with cacao drinks, nut based foods and fats.

DOSAGE:

The recommended dosage for Shilajit herb powder is 1 teaspoon three times a day.

High dose: 1-2 ounces a day, in water, a shake or nut milk.
